Indoor Baseball Training Facility Guide: Batting Tunnel Turf, Nets, Padding & Flooring

Posted by Kodiak Sports on Nov 02, 2026

An indoor baseball and softball training facility lives or dies on its surfaces. Players hit, throw, field, sprint, and lift in the same building, often six or seven days a week, and every square foot takes a different kind of abuse. This guide walks through how to plan the turf, batting tunnels, netting, padding, and flooring for an indoor academy so it plays well on opening day and still looks sharp years later.

Start with the layout, not the products

Before you pick a single roll of turf, map out how the building will actually be used. Most indoor academies end up with four zones:

  • Batting tunnels running the length of the building, usually side by side, each with its own net.
  • An open turf area for fielding, throwing, team practice, and speed and agility work.
  • Pitching lanes or bullpens with portable mounds.
  • A strength and conditioning area on rubber flooring.

Leave a hard-surface walkway (sealed concrete works well) along one side of the tunnels, like the facility in the photo above. It keeps foot traffic, bags, and carts off the turf and gives coaches a clean line of sight down every cage. If you want help sizing tunnels to your building footprint, our batting cage construction team can work from your floor plan.

Choosing turf for indoor batting tunnels

Batting tunnel turf gets hammered in a few concentrated spots: the batter's box, the pitcher's landing area, and the strip where balls roll back. Indoors you don't need drainage or UV protection the way an outdoor cage does, so you can focus on durability, ball roll, and cushion.

  • Nylon turf is the workhorse. Our Sport Pro Nylon 35oz turf is a monofilament nylon built for batting cages, indoor baseball academies, and sprint lanes, with a foam pad for added cushion and longer life. For the heaviest-traffic academies, the Sport Pro Nylon 55oz steps up to one of the most durable turfs on the market.
  • Want a more field-like feel? The Kodiak ATX Sports Pro 65 Turf with Thatch pairs a dense 65 oz face weight and 1.5" pile with a built-in thatch layer that helps fibers stand up, making it a strong choice for high-end training facilities and indoor complexes.
  • Protect the batter's box. Even the best tunnel turf wears fastest where hitters plant and twist. Drop in a 12' x 12' Pro MLB Nylon Catcher's Box & Batting Mat, which uses 52 oz steel-spike-proof nylon with inlaid white lines and home plate that never wear off. Browse all hitting mats for smaller sizes.

Kodiak sports turf rolls come 15' wide and are cut to length, so plan tunnel widths around that roll width to cut down on seams. Installation can be full glue-down, seam-only glue-down, or seam tape, depending on how permanent the space is.

Two-tone turf and inlaid lanes

Look closely at the photo and you'll see red turf lanes with white lines running through green turf. Colored lanes and inlaid lines do more than look good. They mark each tunnel's batter's box and pitching line, help players line up drills the same way every time, and make the facility read as a professional academy on social media and recruiting visits. Inlaid lines are cut into the turf and seamed in, so they don't wear off the way painted lines do. Ask about color and inlay options on a synthetic turf quote.

Open turf for fielding, throwing, and speed work

The open area takes cleats, sleds, agility ladders, and team stretching. A padded sports turf works best here because athletes are on their feet and occasionally on the ground. Our foam padded turf collection lists options with built-in pads, and the full artificial turf collection covers everything from cage turf to field turf. If you can, use the same turf family in the open area and the tunnels so the building looks like one finished space.

Batting tunnel netting

Indoor tunnels are usually hung from a cable system or the building structure, so the net quality shows immediately. A sagging net looks cheap and lets balls drop onto the turf at awkward angles. Kodiak nylon batting cage nets are fully rope-bordered with a center rib rope, hung on the square to minimize sag, and come with an entry door with overlap flap. Hang divider nets between tunnels so a foul ball in one lane doesn't end up in the next. See all sports netting.

Pitching lanes and protective screens

Pitchers need a consistent mound indoors just as much as hitters need a consistent box. Portable pitching mounds let you set up bullpens and then roll them out of the way for team practice. Every tunnel running live BP should also have a padded L-screen, like the Kodiak 7' x 7' Pro Padded Wheeled L-Screen. Browse all baseball and softball screens.

Pad the walls and columns

Indoor facilities have steel columns, block walls, and doorways right next to where athletes are moving fast. Pad them. Indoor sports wood-backed wall padding comes in 2", 3", and 4" thicknesses with 18 oz vinyl and either nailer-lip or hidden Z-clip mounting, and I-beam face padding covers exposed structural steel. Wall padding is also a great place for your academy logo. The full lineup is in our sports padding collection.

Rubber flooring for the strength area

The weight area needs a different surface than the turf. Dropped dumbbells and plates call for dense rubber. Interlocking rubber flooring such as Hammerlock tiles, available as 4' x 4' x 1/2" tiles or 4' x 6' x 1/2" tiles (with 3/4" thickness available in the Hammerlock series for heavier lifting), is vulcanized rubber, so it shrugs off water and spikes from players walking over from the turf. For large, dry indoor areas, rolled rubber flooring is another cost-effective option.

Quick planning checklist

  • Map tunnels, open turf, pitching, and strength zones before you choose products.
  • Plan tunnel widths around 15'-wide turf rolls to cut down on seams.
  • Use durable nylon turf in tunnels and add a spike-proof batter's box mat.
  • Consider colored lanes and inlaid lines for a pro look that won't wear off.
  • Hang sag-free, rope-bordered nets with divider nets between tunnels.
  • Pad every wall, column, and doorway near the action.
  • Put the strength area on vulcanized interlocking rubber tiles.
