Ice Arena Guide: Dasher Board Padding & Moisture-Proof Rubber Flooring
Posted by Kodiak Sports on
Indoor arenas work hard. The same dasher boards that hold an arena football game on Saturday might frame indoor soccer, lacrosse, or a training session midweek, and the walkways and locker rooms see melted ice, wet cleats, and constant traffic. If you are building or refreshing a rink-style facility, the two systems that decide safety and longevity are the dasher padding and the rubber flooring off the playing surface. Here is how we walk facility managers and coaches through both.
Why dasher boards need real padding
Dasher systems take lateral hits, not gentle bumps. Players, balls, and equipment slam into the boards at speed, and thin foam that looks fine in a brochure will compress flat after one season. Our dasher board padding for arena football is built for that abuse: high-density foam in 2", 3", or 4" thickness, covered in durable UV-treated 18 oz vinyl, and cut to your board height, return (top edge), and door openings.
For a standard indoor arena footprint of about 85' x 200' with 42" dashers and a 6" return, we can quote a full system. Custom board heights and multipurpose layouts are normal — we size pads to the dasher you already have, not a one-size catalog panel. Attachment is usually Velcro for faster install and seasonal swaps, or a lace/grommet system when you want a more permanent mount. Lead times are typically 8–12 weeks; rush builds are available when the schedule is tight.
Pad the walls and structure around the rink
Dashers are only part of the collision story. Beam faces, poles, and solid walls behind player benches or warm-up zones need coverage too. Browse the full sports padding collection for options that match arena work:
- Wood-backed indoor wall padding in 2", 3", or 4" foam with 18 oz UV vinyl — nailer-lip mount for a fast screw-down, or hidden aluminum Z-clip rails when you want a clean face and the option to remove pads in the off-season.
- I-beam face padding and round post/pole padding for the steel that shows up in every warehouse-style arena build.
Pads ship in production-sized strips (typically 2' or 4' wide, up to 8' tall per panel) so openings and door returns fit cleanly instead of leaving hard edges exposed.
Choose flooring that survives ice-arena moisture
Off the turf or ice, arenas are wet environments. Melt water, skate traffic, hose-downs, and sweaty locker rooms punish urethane-bonded rolled rubber: it can absorb moisture, bubble, and warp. Hammerlock tiles are different — they are vulcanized rubber (solid melted rubber), water-impervious, and listed for ice arenas, locker rooms, aisles, and walkways.
Common interlocking sizes we spec for arena support spaces:
- 4' x 4' x 1/2" Hammerlock interlocking tiles — about 15 sq ft per tile, loose-lay, no glue required.
- 4' x 6' x 1/2" Hammerlock interlocking tiles — about 22 sq ft per tile for faster coverage on longer corridors.
CNC waterjet-cut edges keep seams tight. Compare the full Hammerlock lineup on our Hammerlock interlocking rubber flooring page or the broader interlocking rubber flooring overview.
Pair the boards with the right indoor turf
Many multipurpose arenas run artificial turf inside the dashers for arena football, soccer, or training. When you are specifying the field surface, start in our artificial sports turf collection and match pile, face weight, and pad to the sports you host. The photo above shows the idea: a full turf field enclosed by professional dasher boards with upper shielding — the padding and perimeter flooring around that field are what keep players and staff safe once the whistle blows.
Quick arena checklist
- Measure dasher height, top return, and every door opening before ordering pads
- Spec 2–4" high-density foam with 18 oz UV vinyl on the boards
- Pad walls, I-beams, and poles in player and warm-up zones
- Use vulcanized Hammerlock (not urethane-bonded roll goods) on wet walkways and locker rooms
- Match indoor turf to the sports that share the floor
