Understanding the Life Cycle Cost of Glue Down vs Velcro Seamed Turf

Velcro seams are a great choice in particular in batting cages, Arena Football, and general athletic areas.

Typically high traffic/directional shifting sports are better off with glue down installations; if the client is going to stay for more than 5 years.

When considering the costs associated with a Glue Down Turf versus a Velcro Seams Turf, there are several important factors to keep in mind.

The table below breaks down the costs associated with each type of turf:

Cost Item Glue Down Turf Velcro Seams Turf
Turf Cost Example $4.00/sq. ft. $4.00/sq. ft.
Glue $0.60-$1.00/sq. ft. $0/sq. ft.
Install Labor (or self install) $2.00/sq. ft. $0.65/sq. ft.
Removal Labor $1.25/sq. ft. $0.60/sq. ft.
Residual Value $0 $1-$2/sq. ft.
Shutdown Business 3-7 days 1-2 days
Total Life Cycle Cost $8.25/sq. ft. $3-4/sq. ft.

Advantage/Disadvantage Glue Down Turf Velcro Seams Turf
Easy Self/DIY Install No Yes
Portable/Reconfigure Space No Yes
Re-Sellable No Yes
Roll up to Service Ceiling Nets/Lights/HVAC No Yes
Replace a damaged Roll easily No Yes
Removes some of Landlord's Leverage No Yes
Seam Little More Visible No Yes

As the table shows, the cost of the turf itself is the same for both options, at $4.00/sq. ft. However, the Glue Down Turf requires glue, which can cost between $0.60-$1.00/sq. ft., whereas the Velcro Seams Turf requires no glue. The Glue Down Turf also requires more labor to install, at $2.00/sq. ft. versus $0.65/sq. ft. for the Velcro Seams Turf.

When it comes to removal labor, the Glue Down Turf is more expensive at $1.25/sq. ft. compared to $0.60/sq. ft. for the Velcro Seams Turf. Additionally, the Velcro Seams Turf has residual value of $1-$2/sq. ft., while the Glue Down Turf has no residual value. Finally, the Glue Down Turf requires a longer shutdown period of 3-7 days, whereas the Velcro Seams Turf only requires 1-2 days.

Overall, the Total Life Cycle Cost of the Glue Down Turf is estimated to be $8.25/sq. ft., while the Velcro Seams Turf has a lower estimated Total Life Cycle Cost of $3-4/sq. ft.
